Tank vs. Tankless Water Heaters: Which Is Right for Your AZ Home?

Upfront cost, energy savings, lifespan, and hot water delivery compared — so you can choose the right unit for your Gilbert home.

When your water heater fails in an Arizona summer, the decision feels urgent. But replacing a unit is also a long-term choice — the one you pick will shape your energy bills, your hot water capacity, and your maintenance schedule for the next decade or more. At Steadfast Plumbing & Water Treatment, we install both tank and tankless systems in Gilbert homes, and the right fit depends more on how your household uses hot water than on any single spec.

Traditional Tank Water Heaters

A tank water heater stores and constantly reheats a reserve of water — usually 40 to 50 gallons. It's the familiar, proven choice, and it carries a lower upfront cost than a tankless system. The trade-off is that it keeps reheating water whether you're using it or not, and once that stored reserve runs out, you wait for it to recover.

In Arizona's hard water, tank units also collect sediment at the bottom. Flushed yearly, a quality tank lasts roughly 10 to 12 years; neglected, that lifespan drops fast.

Tankless Water Heaters

A tankless unit heats water on demand — there's no stored reserve, so you never run out, and it only burns gas or electricity while you're actually drawing water. That makes it noticeably more efficient, and the compact wall-mounted size frees up closet or garage space.

Tankless units cost more upfront and may need upgraded gas lines or electrical capacity to install. In return, they typically last 20 years or more — roughly double a tank's lifespan — and Arizona hard water means they need annual descaling to keep flowing at full capacity.

Which Should You Choose?

Go with a tank if you want the lowest upfront cost and your household's hot water use is predictable and modest. Choose tankless if you're tired of running out, you value long-term energy savings, and you have space for a compact, wall-mounted unit. For larger Gilbert households running multiple showers and appliances at once, we often pair a tankless unit with a small recirculation pump so hot water reaches the far taps instantly.

There's no single right answer — only the right answer for your home. Call (480) 653-2073 and we'll help you weigh the trade-offs for your household.
